Southern California kicker Mario Danelo was found dead yesterday about 120 feet down a rocky cliff near Point Fermin lighthouse in San Pedro, California.
Danelo, the 21-year-old son of former NFL kicker Joe Danelo, made 15 of 16 field goals this season and led the Trojans in scoring with 89 points. The junior made two field goals in the Rose Bowl on Monday to help USC beat Michigan, 32-18.
Police officials sais that USC kicker Mario Danelo's death off the California coast is not likely to have been a suicide.
While police have not completely ruled out foul play, [Lt. Paul] Vernon said "there didn't appear to be a crime involved." An autopsy could be performed as early as Monday, coroner's officials said.
Lt. David Pierson, commanding officer of the LAPD Harbor Division detectives, said "police had no information as to whether Danelo had been drinking and that there was no evidence he committed suicide. Martha Garcia of the Los Angeles Police Department said the body showed signs of traumatic injuries."
Mario Danelo's death comes after Denver Broncos football player Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting while riding in a limousine in downtown Denver.
"The investigation is continuing," said Los Angeles Police Department officer Norma Eisenman. "Right now it is ruled as an undetermined death."
