A recent study published Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine shows that compared with childless adults, parents living with their children eat more saturated fat - the equivalent of a little more than a whole Pizza Hut personal - pan pepperoni pizza each week.
That's nearly five extra grams of fat daily, including 1.7 grams of saturated fat, which is linked to heart disease.
Adults living with young children eat significantly more fat than grown-ups with no kids at home, a new study shows.
Adults with kids consumed nearly 5 more grams of fat and 1.7 more grams of saturated fat every day, the equivalent of an individual pepperoni pizza a week, Dr. Helena Laroche of the University of Iowa in Iowa City and her colleagues found. Adults living with children younger than 17 also ate more salty snacks, cheese, beef, ice cream, cakes and cookies, pizza, and processed meats like bacon.
Dr. Helena Laroche says the poor food choices may be because of time pressures as well as advertising aimed at children.
"Once these foods are in the house, even if bought for the children, adults appear more likely to eat them," Laroche said.
So what does the study say about the times we live in?
"It says that everyone is eating more fat and more unhealthy things than they should and that there may be additional pressures on parents," the researcher said.
"We need to make more healthy food available and easy," she added.
