(NASDAQ: JAVA) today extended its family of Intel Xeon-based Sun Fire servers with two new offerings for High Performance Computing (HPC), Web 2.0 and back office computing workloads, including the fastest 1U server for HPC workloads and the most expandable 2U enterprise-class system based on Intel Xeon processors.

   IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Sun (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that IBM will distribute the Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS) and Solaris Subscriptions for select x86-based IBM System x servers and BladeCenter servers to clients through IBM's routes to market.

   IDC on Tuesday released a report saying that shipments of servers powered by x86 processors will not grow as fast as previously forecasted. The reason for the change is that many companies are buying fewer, more powerful servers.
