Blu-ray and HD DVD  Today, a hacker going under the alias "muslix64" released a utility which is capable of decrypting a AACS protected HD-DVD discs.

The crack was posted on the Doom9.org forums where the hacker revealed that his application "BackupHDDVD" that strips encryption from HD DVD discs. BackupHDDVD, his Java-coded utility that gets a movie's key from memory, possibly via the player software, and then uses it to copy the movie over to the hard drive in an unencrypted form. There are two problems with this utily : the source - is highly unstable and works with only one title.

AACS - "Advanced Access Content System". A specification for managing content stored on the next generation of prerecorded and recorded optical media for consumer use with Personal Computers (PC)s and Consumer Electronics (CE) devices. AACS complements new innovations in the next-generation of optical discs, and enables consumers to enjoy next-generation content, including high-definition content. AACS defines content distribution and digital rights management for the purpose of restricting sharing and copying of the next generation of Digital Versatile Discs (DVD)s.

This is the system used in Blu-ray and HD DVD discs to protect content stored on disc from illegal duplication.
