Fujitsu Wins Major Server, Storage Order from China Mobile Communications

Thu, Jun 26, 2008

Fujitsu (China) Holdings Co., Ltd. today announced that China Mobile Communications Corporation, the country's largest mobile phone carrier, has selected Fujitsu's SPARC Enterprise UNIX servers, ETERNUS storage equipment, and PRIMECLUSTER middleware for its core information system, which is to be deployed in all 31 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions in mainland China. Fujitsu will also set up 24 x 7 maintenance support sites across mainland China and dispatch personnel and supply maintenance components to the sites as part of a support network to keep the system running smoothly.

With close to 400 million subscribers, China Mobile Communications boasts the world's largest mobile subscriber base and network, and is rapidly expanding its IT system in order to build an advanced network that will serve as an important infrastructure spanning China's vast territory.

China Mobile Communications' core IT system encompasses its billing system, network management system, and other critical functions, with all systems operating 24 x 7. To enable this core IT system, Fujitsu won an order consisting of 200 SPARC Enterprise UNIX servers, including its top-of-the-line M9000 as well as mid-range models, 30 units of its storage equipment, primarily consisting of the high-end ETERNUS8000 model 2100, and one installation of its PRIMECLUSTER middleware package to ensure overall system reliability. The complete order, worth a total of 2 billion yen, is scheduled to be gradually deployed over the next five months.

This represents the first large-scale order for an IT platform from China Mobile Communications to a Japanese vendor. Fujitsu was selected because of the enhanced maintenance and support network being provided, Fujitsu's track record in China's telecommunications sector, and its partnership in this project with Linkage Technology (Group) Co. Ltd., which teamed up with Fujitsu to bid for the project. Fujitsu plans to build on this accomplishment and work with Linkage Technology (Group) in the future to build systems for additional customers to expand their businesses.

Fujitsu's Platform Services in China

In April 2006, the Fujitsu Group established the Platform Solution Center in Shanghai, its largest platform verification facility outside of Japan, and began full-scale sales of its platform products (servers, storage, and middleware) in China at the same time. The Center offers extensive services, allowing customers and partners, including China Mobile Communications and Linkage Technology (Group), to conduct operational verification prior to deployment. These services have already enabled Fujitsu to deploy over 2,500 of its servers and storage systems in China.
