Marvell
(Nasdaq: MRVL), a leader in storage,
communications and consumer silicon solutions, today introduced Marvell(R)
CarrierSpan(TM) technology, targeted for Metro Ethernet and carrier
networks. CarrierSpan brings scalability, flexibility and reliable service
delivery to high performance broadband deployments.
"Our CarrierSpan technology creates a solid foundation and flexible
infrastructure for service delivery over carrier Ethernet and metro
networks to better meet the needs of service providers," said Dr. Simon
Milner, vice president and general manager, enterprise business unit,
communications and consumer business group at Marvell. "With a complete
portfolio of CarrierSpan-powered products ranging from Prestera(R) and
LinkStreet(R) Packet Processors, to Alaska(R) Physical Layer devices (PHY)
and Marvell's ARM instruction set compliant family of SoCs, Marvell is
uniquely positioned to accelerate Network Equipment Manufacturer's (NEMs)
time to revenue."
As Metro Ethernet and carrier networks have evolved from simple
transport solutions to the delivery of quadruple play services, service
providers and NEMs are faced with increasing challenges. Today's networks
demand scalability up to hundreds of thousands of subscribers, while
requiring support for different access technologies. In addition, the
network fabric has to support a variety of services and applications, each
demanding a unique combination of network resources. For example, some
applications are time sensitive; others demand higher bandwidth, while
others need guaranteed quality of service and security.
Marvell's CarrierSpan technology is designed to ensure line rate
service delivery with enhanced packet processors based on new and emerging
standards (TR101, Mac-in-Mac, IP-VPN, VPWS, VPLS). In addition, the new
technology provides scalable multicast delivery capabilities for IP-based
video. These features enable new revenue streams for providers offering
managed services like business Internet access and secure VPNs.
Addressing the need for a robust service delivery fabric, CarrierSpan
provides hardware assistance to insure five 9's uptime with reduced
overhead in Operations, Administration and Management (OAM) of the network.
A variety of MEF, ITU, IEEE and IETF OAM standards are supported and are
designed to enable the service provider to guarantee network SLA and
carrier grade reliability. Integrated timing and synchronization
capabilities enable inter-working with existing circuit switched networks.
Additionally, CarrierSpan provides flexible uplink capabilities with
hardware hooks for quality of service (QoS) interoperability to the access
nodes, enabling a variety of service delivery architectures (xDSL, GPON,
GEPON, Ethernet FTTx).
The Marvell family of switching solutions is designed specifically to
meet the demands of high-performance networks, and provide the reliability
and resiliency necessary for business continuity. In addition, Marvell's
solutions provide advanced security to protect data, network users and the
network infrastructure, as well as robust QoS for IP applications including
voice, video, and mission critical data services.
