Nortel Makes Future More Affordable for Wireless Service Providers

Sat, Feb 16, 2008

Wireless service providers seeking to offer advanced voice and data capabilities without replacing existing network gear take note. Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] has your solution.

In an industry first, Nortel is demonstrating at Mobile World Congress** in Barcelona (Hall 8, B145) the ability to provide VoIP calling using a 2G/3G GSM/UMTS core network to host 4G WiMAX access. This is good news for GSM and UMTS wireless operators looking to evolve to 4G, as they can look to Nortel's innovative technology to cost-effectively support it all: current 2G and 3G voice and text services as well as future 4G communication services like advanced mobile broadband.

"Just as the wireless phone revolutionized voice telephony by freeing the user from wires and stationary constraints, mobile broadband is doing the same for high speed data communications" said Graham Richardson, general manager, GSM Networks, Nortel. "This industry-first demonstration proves that Nortel is committed to designing solutions that protect wireless operator investments, allowing them to support today's subscriber demand for voice and text services as well as future 4G services like end-to-end IP and high-quality streaming video"

Nortel has all the elements needed to bring carriers successfully into the 4G world: innovation in WiMAX and LTE, a strong ecosystem, all IP-core, and a deep understanding of what consumer and business users are looking for from their wireless experience.

In a futuristic scenario, Nortel is showing a user with a 4G mobile broadband device placing and receiving calls and controlling device access using Nortel's 4G-enabled 2G and 3G Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) Server and Media Gateway. These are components of Nortel's globally available All-IP GSM and UMTS Voice Core product line. Nortel's All-IP MSC Server, operating on commercial off-the-shelf ATCA technology to support today's GSM/UMTS voice communications, blends today's 2G/3G call control with next generation SIP signaling for voice services at the end-user terminal.

Nortel Research Shows Big Opportunity to Sell Fixed Mobile Convergence to Small and Medium Sized Businesses Nortel's IP Powered Business Solutions Can Help Service Providers Capitalize.

The potential for sale of IP-based technology to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) is substantial, according to recent market research commissioned by Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT]. That's good news for service providers, thanks to Nortel's IP Powered Business Solutions, that make it easy for service providers to sell and host pre-tested IP solutions to the growing SMB market.

Fifty percent of SMBs surveyed have voice networks three or more years old, and despite the fact that nearly half characterize themselves as "early adopters" or "on the leading edge of new telecommunications technology" only 40 percent have actually implemented VoIP or any IP-based mobile convergence solution.

"The research clearly indicates a great opportunity for service providers to target SMBs" said Alf deCardenas, general manager, Carrier Multimedia Networks, Nortel. "Our solutions are designed to help them deliver a full range of simple solutions for SMBs that easily allow carriers to offer advanced SIP applications without the cost or complexity often associated with next generation communication services"

Launched in October 2007, Nortel's IP Powered Business Solutions combine the latest carrier VoIP technology with SIP phones and other devices, all available for delivery on-site or fully-hosted by the service provider. Also integral to these solutions are Nortel's Global Services for SMBs, which include planning, installation, management and technical support. The solution will be available this quarter to carriers in North America and Europe with other regions following shortly thereafter.

The research, conducted with RONIN Corporation**, included a web survey of approximately 900 SMB and Enterprise decision makers across the United States, France and the United Kingdom. It was designed to gain insight into SMB perception and use of VoIP, along with SIP applications like click-to-connect and converged mobility for Wi-Fi and cellular calling from dual-mode handsets. The value SMBs place on SIP services and the impact of pricing on service adoption were also assessed.

Among other findings, the research found that:

  • SMBs are more likely to go to service providers than resellers for voice hardware and Internet services.
  • Converged mobility - the ability to make phone calls over WiFi and cellular networks via a dual-mode phone - is the service SMBs are most likely to consider for implementation followed by web services like click-to-connect and converged desktop applications that allow you to easily control calls from any cellular phone using a laptop application.

Nortel is demonstrating SIP applications like converged mobility and web services in a real estate business scenario at Mobile World Congress 2008** in Barcelona, Spain (Hall 8, B145). This realistic SMB environment will show how Nortel's IP Powered Business Solutions can help SMBs accelerate their sales cycle and open the door to new revenue opportunities.

Nortel's IP Powered Business Solutions offer two deployment models: hosted solutions and customer premise equipment (CPE) to suit the varying needs of SMBs. The solutions include Nortel's Business Services Gateway (BSG), Nortel's Business Communications Manager (BCM) 50, Nortel/LG IP phones as well as VoIP lines through both the Communication Server (CS) 2000 and the Application Server (AS) 5200.

According to Dell' Oro Group, Nortel is the worldwide leader in Carrier VoIP and has been for six years running (2002-through to the latest reported numbers for 2007). Dell'Oro Group has also reported that Nortel is the worldwide leader in Hybrid IP Small shipments, having shipped more IP lines to date (2002-through to the latest reported numbers for 2007) than any other manufacturer.
