Motorola, Inc. today extended its leadership in government mobility with the
introduction of Good Mobile Messaging Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions (Good S/MIME). Designed specifically to meet federal government
security policy requirements, Good S/MIME supports the Motorola Q family of
smartphones and gives the Department of Defense (DoD) and associated
government agencies a mobile messaging solution that is more personalized
and easier to manage and administrate than other alternatives.
While DoD agencies such as the Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Air Force
are highly mobile and dependent upon secure, anywhere, anytime access to
data to do their jobs, they have not previously been given options when it
comes to mobile email. With stringent security requirements such as the
Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD 12) which requires the use
of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and Department of Defense Directive
8100.2 (DoD 8100.2), which mandates the use of a common access card (CAC)
to access mobile devices and information, few mobile messaging systems meet
the federal government's advanced security requirements. Good S/MIME is
compliant with the mandated standards for public key encryption and signing
of e-mail, and with approval from The Defense Information Security Agency
(DISA) has developed a software technical implementation guide (STIG) to
enable DoD agencies to begin deploying Good S/MIME immediately.
"For years, CIOs in the DoD have been asking for a secure mobile
messaging solution that allows them to take advantage of the newest Windows
Mobile devices and extends them more of the customizability of their
desktop while they are mobile," said Charles Kriete, President and CEO,
OTBT, Inc., the leading wireless communications distributor to the Federal
Government sales channel. "Good S/MIME together with the MOTO Q family of
devices meets the federal government's strictest security requirements and
delivers a killer user experience that truly rivals a desktop or laptop--on
powerful, sleek 3G and 2.5G devices."
Superior User Experience with Common Access Card Integration
Good S/MIME works with the Motorola Q family of smartphones,
Bluetooth(R) CAC-readers and standard DoD-issued common access cards to
seamlessly secure CAC communication, sign and encrypt emails and
attachments, and deliver a superior user experience featuring:
- Automatic signing and encrypting of attachments, including Word, Excel,
PowerPoint and PDF documents and pictures, for greater productivity and
maximum security
- 3-click CAC pairing provides a simple and efficient process for end
users to pair their CAC readers to their smartphones and minimizes
deployment costs for IT
- Automatic over-the-air synchronization of all certificates delivers
cable-free access to all certificates, including Personal Contacts,
rather than just those stored in the corporate directory (GAL and
LDAP), for easier, more efficient communication that does not require
the use of a cable
Personalized, Productive and Secure Mobile E-Mail
Good S/MIME includes all of the new features of the recently introduced
Good Mobile Messaging 5 (Good 5) software and service. Using Good S/MIME
with the MOTO Q family of devices, DoD users get a fully integrated mobile
RSS reader and subscription manager, the ability to group and sort emails
by conversation threads, the ability to customize priority mail with
personalized notifications, and complete calendaring capabilities,
including real-time free-busy visibility and conference room look-up. In
addition, Good S/MIME provides IT managers with ultimate control through
advanced security and management capabilities including a web-based
monitoring portal for real-time handheld fleet visibility, a mandatory
application checker, application blacklisting, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SD-card
and camera lock-down, and SD-card and database encryption, all through a
single management console with complete over-the-air controls.
"There has been a void in mobile email solutions for the federal
government, where security has come at the price of a poor mobile
experience and manageability headaches," said Sue Forbes, Senior Director
Product management and Marketing, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Business.
"With Good Mobile Messaging S/MIME, we've eliminated the compromises. Users
can now be as productive on their handsets as they are with their laptops
and enjoy a personalized mobile experience, while IT can ensure the highest
level of security to comply with government directives."
Good Mobile Messaging S/MIME Edition is available now through certified
value-added resellers and directly through Motorola. The software and
service will support the Motorola Q family of smartphones running on
Microsoft Exchange.
