Sun StorageTek Ready Solution for PureDisk Remote Office Backup Appliance

Thu, Jun 14, 2007

Sun Microsystems today announced a new remote office back-up solution designed to deliver around-the-clock data protection in remote office and data center locations. Available through Sun's Customer Ready Systems (CRS) program, the Sun StorageTek Ready Solution for Symantec PureDisk Remote Office Back-up Appliance combines Sun Fire x4100 servers, Symantec's NetBackup PureDisk Remote Office Edition and Sun StorageTek 6140 modular disk arrays. The appliance offers a more sophisticated and automated level of data protection than traditional methods, removing up to 98 percent of data backup redundancies. This reduces administration costs and increases productivity while securing and optimizing data protection, and improving the reliability of backup and recovery processes.

"With today's regulatory requirements, it's critical that remote office data is in sync with headquarters," said Julius Lukacs, senior director, market development, Sun Microsystems. "Working with Symantec, we've created an easy-to-deploy backup and recovery solution built on Sun's award winning x64 servers and storage systems that enable customers to secure and centralize remote office data while mitigating risk and managing cost."

"By simplifying and centralizing data protection at remote offices, NBU PureDisk, combined with Sun servers and storage provide customers with a unified solution," said Matt Kixmoeller, senior director, NetBackup Product Management, Symantec. "The tight integration between Symantec software and Sun hardware provides greater online data history and enables faster recovery in meeting compliancy requirements for data protection."

The Sun StorageTek Ready Solution for PureDisk Remote Office Backup Appliance joins disk-based back-up with global data de-duplication, improving performance, reducing the storage consumption of backups and the cost of tape and back-up administration by as much as four times over typical costs. Data management processes are streamlined via the data de-duplication capability, which consolidates data volume into as little as 10 times less than the original volume. Network performance and bandwidth is increased, as the solution reduces the volume of backup data running over the wide area network (WAN) to the data center by up to 90 percent versus traditional backup methods. The solution runs on energy-efficient, high performance Sun Fire x4100 servers with StorageTek 6140 modular disk arrays, which provide an ideal data storage scheme using multiple disks to increase protection of business-critical data and applications.

The solution is available as of June 2007, with entry level pricing for a two terabyte solution starting at $66,795.
