Rosetta, the largest independent interactive marketing agency in the U.S., today released a study showing 37 percent of 100 leading online retailers currently offer alternative payment methods -- a 23 percent increase since November of 2007.
The study, conducted in December 2008, showed that Bill Me Later is most popular at 26 percent, with PayPal now nearly tied at 25 percent. Google Checkout showed a small increase from 10 percent in 2007 to 11 percent. Only 7 percent of the retailers examined offer all three methods.
"Even though it boasts high consumer confidence, Google Checkout is struggling in retailer adoption," notes Adam Cohen, partner with Rosetta's Consumer Products and Retail Practice. "Adoption of the service started out strong last year, but has stagnated in the last 12 months. They discontinued the incentives for retailers during the 2008 holiday season, which is likely having a negative impact on Google Checkout adoption on an ongoing basis."
Cohen adds, "We're starting to see buzz around smaller services such as eBillme and eCheck, but with PayPal's share nearly equaling Bill Me Later's, these two have emerged as the major players and will continue to thrive as consumers look for names they trust to complete online transactions."
The study included 100 retailers with a significant e-commerce presence or brand awareness. Those wishing to see a full copy of the study can contact Brenda Patterson at Shev Rush PR Agency.
