On behalf of AARP's 40
million members, AARP Chief Executive Officer Bill Novelli today issued an
urgent call to the American people to demand action by our elected leaders
in Washington to solve the current economic crisis. Novelli noted,
"Americans are angry at the idea of bailing out Wall Street, but in this
case Wall Street is us. These are our stocks; our retirement funds; our
futures. That's why our elected officials in Washington must come together
with overwhelming bipartisan support to pass legislation and fix this
economic crisis."
Novelli called on elected officials to act with a renewed determination
in developing a viable rescue plan within an immediate timetable. He noted
that failure to act will mean even greater risk to Americans' jobs, homes,
retirements and the economic security of all generations.
"Our nation is facing an historic economic crisis that affects every
American, especially those 50-plus," added Novelli. "It requires urgent
action and it has to be fair. People can't afford to wait 10 years for this
economy to turn around. AARP is urging Congress to pass a bipartisan plan
that protects taxpayers, lets people know where the money is going, and
helps homeowners with huge mortgage debts and facing foreclosure."
Novelli concluded, "We need action, but anger alone won't do it.
Elected officials need to fix this problem. They need to do it right, and
do it now. Now is not the time for partisanship. It's time for leadership."
