American Red Cross Responds to California Wildfires

Mon, Nov 24, 2008

As wildfires raged through the Los Angeles area, the American Red Cross was there providing food, shelter and comfort to local residents. The Red Cross sheltered hundreds of evacuees at the height of the fires. We served thousands of meals and snacks to evacuees, firefighters and to residents who visited shelters for the latest news on the fires and to find out if their homes stood in harm's way. For those who needed emotional support or referrals to additional community resources, trained workers offered guidance.

The Red Cross was able to provide these services thanks to members of the Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program. The Annual Disaster Giving Program members pledge donations on an on-going basis, in advance of major disasters, to help the Red Cross ensure an immediate response to meet the needs of those affected by disasters of all sizes, at no cost and regardless of income.

"The American Red Cross is humbled by the outpouring of support from the members of the Annual Disaster Giving Program," said Jeffrey Towers, chief development officer of the American Red Cross. "We wouldn't be able to fulfill our mission without them."

American Red Cross:

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the California Wildfires, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. The American Red Cross honors donor intent.
