The New York City Health Department today unveiled the country's first city-themed condom. New York City officials hope that NYC Condom Program will help encourage people to engage in safe-sex practices during the holiday and beyond.
The free official NYC condom comes with a subway motif and colors to match the city's various train lines. The condoms are promoted with the slogan "New York we've got you covered", and the provocative "NYC condoms - get some".
Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said the city's expansive condom distribution plan could help cut drastically the number of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, and unwanted pregnancies.
The condoms will be available at more than 100 nightspots and retail stores across the city. The Health Department gives away more than 1.5 million condoms a month through a network of more than 900 community centers and businesses.
The New York will spend about $US720,000 on condoms this year. The city negotiated a deal with the maker of the LifeStyles brand for 4 cents per condom.
