
The deadline for Nobel Peace Prize nominations was yesterday. Former Vice-President Al Gore and Canadian Inuit activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier have been nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to bring the dangers of global warming to world attention, a Norwegian legislator said today.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. The Committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting (Norwegain Parliament). The Committee's composition reflects the relative strengths of the political parties in the Storting, and is assisted by specially appointed expert advisers.
Nomination to the Nobel Peace Prize is by invitation only. The Nobel Committee sends confidential forms to persons who are competent and qualified to nominate. The names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed until 50 years later.
