Bali increases security over New Year

Sat, Dec 30, 2006
Bali Island   The Indonesian resort island of Bali has tightened security even though there is no specific threat of a terrorist attack over the New Year holiday period.

Thousands of extra police and troops have been deployed to guard churches, mosques and tourist spots.

Bali police chief Paulus Purwoko has told reporters there is always the possibility of an attack.

He says security has been tightened at entry points on Bali, but admits it is hard to police the whole coastline.

He added that major ports in the west and east of the island have been equipped with sniffer dogs to detect explosives.

Bali is an Indonesian island home to the vast majority of Indonesia's small Hindu minority. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music.
