The American people,
through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), have
provided $100,000 to assist those affected by the floods in Zambia. With
this funding, USAID will procure emergency relief supplies for ongoing
relief efforts to assist flood-affected populations.
Since December 2007, heavy rains in southern Zambia have led to
flooding in the capital city of Lusaka, Eastern, Western, and Southern
provinces. The floods have killed at least 10 people and displaced more
than 34,000 others, according to the GRZ's Vulnerability Assessment
Committee. In addition, the floods have destroyed roads, bridges, and
crops. On February 1, the GRZ requested international assistance to
alleviate the impact of the floods.
USAID will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with the
GRZ and other donors to provide additional assistance based on identified
humanitarian needs.
The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International
Development, have provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide
for nearly 50 years.
